Doug Zimmerman celebrates his victory during Spring Championships.
Zimmerman, Free, Swan & Dooley take trophies home
A week earlier, Montgomery driver Doug Zimmerman took the white flag in the lead of the winged sprint feature at Butler (Mi.) Speedway, only to see the victory snatched out of his grasp. During Spring Championships on Saturday at the track, Zimmerman used a determined effort to make his way to victory lane.
Other drivers taking home trophies during Spring Championships were Kevan Free (UMP Modifieds), Eric Swan (Sportsman), and Bob Dooley (street stocks).
Ryan Kirkendall and Aaron Smith made up the front row for Saturday's 25-lap winged sprint feature. Smith was involved in an opening lap mishap and retired from the event, while Kirkendall would lead the opening laps of the race. Nine-time track champ Ken Mackey darted under on lap 2 with Zimmerman also getting past, and the duo began to wage a torrid battle for the lead.
Using the high groove, Zimmerman got past Mackey at one point, only to see a caution flag nullify the pass. Mackey sped away on the race restart, but late in the race Zimmerman gathered him in and swept around the outside of turn 2 for the lead. Mackey would hold second at the finish.
Following Zimmerman and Mackey at the checker were John Gall, Shelby Bilton, and Sean Robinson. The rest of the top 10 were Rocky LoPresto, Aaron Smith, Gerry Hart, Mark Broughman, and Chad Hart. Sprint car heat races were won by Mackey, Bilton, and Smith.
Free claimed his first career win in a modified last season at Butler. On Saturday, the Indiana driver had to hold off defending track champion Tommy Beezley to gain the win in a race that saw a huge frontstretch pileup take out several cars at the start. Free started outside the front row and was ahead of the frontstretch melee. Beezley ducked under Corey Bevard for second early in the race and spent the rest of the event hounding Free, but could never get past.
Behind Free and Beezley at the finish were Josh Lolmaugh, John Swift, and Greg Socha. The rest of the top 10 were Jake Rendel, Matt Eagen, Brian McFeters, George Krawczynski, and Mike Langdon. Modified heat races were won by Beezley, Langdon, and Brian Przepiora.
Eric Swan became the first repeat feature winner this season at the track with his checker in the sportsman division. Swan also drove to victory in the May 15 opener. He led the 20-lapper from start-to-finish. Defending sportsman champion Logan Beckwith spent much of the race in second, but was unable to chase down the driver of the white #0 car.
At the checker it was Swan, Beckwith, Larry Henderson, Jake Rendel, and Wes Bates. Sixth through 10th were Fred Speck, Cameron Hoaglin, Dwayne Feltner, Matt Bell, and Ryan Crandall. Sportsman heat races were won by Zach Henderson and Marty French.
In the street stocks, Tom Miller and Glenn Heath held the lead before Bob Dooley made his way to the front from a starting spot deep in the pack. Dooley ducked under Miller for second and later got past Heath with a lowside pass after battling nearly a lap with the winner of the season-opener. Dooley is in a rare class of his own at the track, as he has feature victories in a sprint car, late model, modified and street stock.
Ron McCumber finished second, with Bruce Stephens third, Corey Burch fourth, and Kevin Butters fifth. The rest of the top 10 were Tom Miller, John Ruby, Sheryll Dishaw, Derek LaPratt, and Joe Elliott. Heath was credited with 11th. Heat races in the street stocks were won by Dooley, Heath, Jeff Burroughs, and Bob Rendel. B Mains went to McCumber and Keith Hiller.
