BLONDE, THIRLBY AND BUTTERS ALL GRAB FEATURE CHECKERS
Chad Blonde in
Winged Sprint Cars, Collin Thirlby in UMP Modifieds and Kevin Butters in Street
Stocks were all victorious in feature events at the Butler Motor Speedway.
With the Michigan
Dirt Cup Event for UMP Modifieds taking place at the Speedway, you knew the pits would be full and
the racing to make the 21 car starting field for the A main would be
intense. With hot laps in the books, the
clouds decided to open up and dump rain on us right at the 7:30 start time. A huge thank you goes out to the Butler weekly racers who
took to the track to help with the drying of the 3/8 mile. With starting time now kicking off at 9 pm,
the Winged Sprint heats and UMP Modified Dirt Cup heat races would all run in
less than an hour.
The first feature
event to hit the track would be the Winged Sprint Cars with Doug Zimmerman and
Brandon Hyliard bringing the field to green.
Zimmerman would jump to the early lead when the yellow would wave for a
lap 1 spin by Aaron Shaeffer. Zimmerman
would lead on the restart and see the yellow wave for Josh Turner, who slid off
turn 3. Back to green, Zimmerman would
lead until lap 7, when 4th starting Chad Blonde would get by
Zimmerman in lapped traffic. Blonde
would lead until a lap 10 yellow for contact between Chris Jones and Ernie
Kuehneman. Jones would be done for the
night with front end damage. On the
restart Blonde and Zimmerman would take off with Kyle Sauder and Brandon
Hyliard in tow. A lap 12 yellow would
slow the field when Gerry Hart would spin after suffering mechanical failure in
the rear of the car, ending his night.
Back to green with Blonde leading, until the yellow would wave on lap 14
for a 4 car pile up with Ryan Kirkendall, Chad Hart, Len Robison and Bill
Jacoby all involved. On the restart,
Josh Turner would roll to a stop off turn 4 with a flat left rear tire. Back to green, Blonde would lead until the
yellow flew on lap 17 for contact between Tom Davies and Bill Jacoby. Jacoby would continue, while Davies was done
for the night. The green would wave with
Blonde leading and Zimmerman 2nd, until the yellow flew again on lap
22 for Aaron Shaeffer rolling to a stop in turn 4. Back to green, only to have the red flag wave
when points leader Chris Jones and John Gall made contact with Gall flipping
his sprinter. Both drivers were ok, but
the cars were done for the night. With a
3 lap shootout to the finish, it would be Chad Blonde collecting the win over
Zimmerman, Sauder, Scott Euler and Hyliard rounding out the top 5. With 22 Winged Sprint cars in the pits, the
heat race wins went to the points leader Chris Jones, Blonde and Shelby Bilton.
The next feature
event would be for the Michigan Dirt Cup stop 2 event at Butler with Zack Olger and Collin Thirlby
bringing the field to green. Thirlby
would jump to the early lead until a lap 2 yellow would fly for a spinning
Mitch Kirkendall. The spin would collect
Mark Anderson and Joe Rokos. The field
would go back to green until lap 4 when 2011 Track Champion Mike Tarlton would
slide to a stop off turn 3 and 4. The
field would go back to green and Thirlby would lead Olger, while back in the
pack, cars started dropping out. Mark
Anderson, Rich Robinson Jr and Todd Feutz would all drop out of the race. The race would continue green, and go to the
lap 30 checkered with Collin Thirlby collecting the big payday, ahead of Olger,
2011 Dirt Cup Champion Jacob Poel, Tim Dalman and Rokos. !7th starting and B main winner
Aaron Morey would charge all the way up to 6th place, with Jeff
Erickson, Corey Bevard, Josh Lolmaugh and Steve Shellenberger rounding out the
top 10. With 46 UMP modifieds on the
grounds, the heat race winners were Rokos, Thirlby, Dalman, Olger and Feutz
with Lolmaugh, Morey and Brian Brindley capturing the B main events.
The final feature
event of the night would be for the Street Stocks with Kevin Butters and Kyle
Kulikowski bringing the field to green.
Butters would jump to the lead, and would lead every lap on his way to
his first feature win of the 2012 season.
Sheryll Dishaw, Jeff Hinkley Jr, Dallas Prater and Chris Garrett would
round out the top 5. With 32 Street
Stocks on hand, the heat race winners were Butters, Prater, Garrett and Hinkley
Jr, while John Ruby would capture the B main.
Coming up on June
23, the full 5 in 1 program will be on hand as the Mini Sprints will make there
second stop of the season and join the regular program of Winged Sprint Cars,
UMP Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks.
